In order to study mammalian neural crest differentiation in vitro, a series of clonal neural crest (NC) cell lines have been generated by infection of migrating mouse neural crest cells with two recombinant retroviruses containing either the c-myc or N-myc proto-oncogenes. Many cell lines were generated which could be subdivided into three groups based on their appearance in culture. Eleven of these cell lines representative of each of the morphological groups were characterized for the expression of six antigenic markers expressed by neural cells.
