A series of sulfonated polymides containing benzimidazole groups were synthesized using 4,4'-binaphthyl-1,1',8,8'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether-2,2'-disulfonic acid (ODADS) as the sulfonated diamine, and 2-(3',5-diaminophenyl)benzimidazole (a) or 6,4'-diamino-2-phenylbenzimidazole (b) as the nonsulfortated diamine.
