Barn och knapp ekonomi

This report focuses on child poverty from the child’s perspective. The results spring from a study that had two overall aims. The first was an overview of national and international literature where children in poor families have been interviewed. The second was to explore suitable ways and methods of reaching and meeting with children in poor families. The report contains two parts, each aim is addressed in each part. In the first part, the literature overview, the results indicate that children irrespective of nationality, experience similar consequences of living in poverty. The economic situation leads, more or less, to social and material deprivation and a consciousness of the situation. The results show that the main effect is that poverty reduces children’s possibilities to live a socially active life with family, friends and in school. The results also indicate that children, irrespective of nationality, experience the situation differently depending on various factors, for example family relations, coping strategies, age, social network and structural differences between countries. In the second part, testing ways of contact and methods, the results indicate that the best ways of reaching children in poor families is through gatekeepers who have a familiar and trusting relation to their parents. The results also show that the use of various methods gives a broad and complete understanding of children’s own experiences of living in poverty. However, meeting the children only once, which was the case in the study, does not give a deep understanding of the complexities of their every day lives. Studies that follow children over a longer period of time are needed for that purpose. Den handlar också om hur forskare, studenter och andra intresserade kan nå och möta barnen. I rapporten, som består av två delar, ingår dels en kunskapsöversikt över nationella och internationella studier, dels resultat från en empirisk undersökning i Malmö stad. I den första delen, kunskapsöversikten, redovisar författaren det aktuella kunskapsläget, likheter och skillnader i barns berättelser samt diskuterar hur internationella studier kan relateras till svenska förhållanden. I den andra delen redovisas och diskuteras kontaktvägar och metoder för att nå och möta barn i familjer med knapp ekonomi. Frågor som besvaras är: Vilka kontaktvägar och metoder är lämpliga att använda sig av? Vilken slags kunskap och information ger olika metoder?
