Läromedelsanvändning i gymnasielärares matematikundervisning

This thesis is about the use of textbooks and alternative teaching material in the mathematics teaching in high school. The study focuses on teaching and learning material, discusses in what way they meet the teaching purposes, and what factors are influencing the choice of textbooks and teaching material. The empirical study consists of a qualitative method for collecting data in form of interviews. Six teachers affiliated at five different high schools answered questions concerning their teaching tools. The main result of this study is that the textbook preserves its role as the most dominating teaching tool. Possible alternative tools like ICT, computers, mathematics programs, different internet sites, online exercises, math games, worksheets with answers, virtual and concrete manipulatives, and teachers’ own materials are merely used for extending and completing already existing textbook material. Some factors influencing the choice of textbooks are: the relationship between textbook and curriculum, the content and structure of the textbook, how the textbooks satisfy different kinds and needs of pupils, lack of time, recommendations of colleagues, and economic factors. Economic factors are important for the choice of other teaching material, too, but teachers’ creativity and interests turn out to be more important here. Some teachers argue against the dominating role of textbooks, but our result shows that all participants use textbooks in their teaching anyway. It seems that textbooks save time and give stability and predictability for both teachers and students. The use of textbooks and alternative teaching material varies considerably between the various participating teachers. Denna uppsats handlar om läroböcker och alternativt undervisningsmaterial i gymnasieskolan. Studien sätter läromedlet i centrum, diskuterar på vilket sätt det uppfyller undervisningens syfte och reder sedan ut vilka faktorer som har betydelse för lärarnas val av läromedel. Den empiriska delen består av en kvalitativ intervju. Sex lärare som arbetar på fem olika skolor har svarat på frågor som rör deras användning av och syn på läromedel. Studiens resultat visar att läroboken fortfarande idag försvarar sin roll som det viktigaste läromedlet i matematikundervisningen. IKT, datorer, online uppgiftsbank, olika webbsidor med matematikspel, datorprogram, kompletterande material, exempelvis egenproducerat material och laborativt material används i huvudsak för att komplettera läroboken. De viktigaste faktorerna som påverkar valet av lärobok är: kopplingen till läroplan, lärobokens innehåll och struktur, anpassning till olika elevgrupper, tidsbrist, kollegornas synpunkter och ekonomiska resurser. Ekonomiska faktorer spelar även roll vid valet av alternativa läromedel, men det visar sig att lärarens engagemang, kreativitet och intresse har stor betydelse här. Samtliga deltagande lärare använder någon lärobok i sin matematikundervisning, trots att en del av deltagarna har en negativ attityd gentemot lärobokscentrerad undervisning. Det verkar som om läroboken ger stabilitet och förutsägbarhet för såväl lärare som elever.
