This thesis is about the use of textbooks and alternative teaching material in the mathematics teaching in high school. The study focuses on teaching and learning material, discusses in what way they meet the teaching purposes, and what factors are influencing the choice of textbooks and teaching material. The empirical study consists of a qualitative method for collecting data in form of interviews. Six teachers affiliated at five different high schools answered questions concerning their teaching tools. The main result of this study is that the textbook preserves its role as the most dominating teaching tool.
