ISRAELI SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DELIVERS SIBLEY LECTURE AT UGA SCHOOL OF LAW

Wilner, (706) 542-5238 ISRAELI SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DELIVERS SIBLEY LECTURE AT UGA SCHOOL OF LAW ATHENS, Ga. -- Dalia Dorner, justice of the Supreme Court of Israel, will deliver the University of Georgia School of Law\u27s 89th Sibley Lecture Wednesday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the law school\u27s Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. Dorner will discuss Does Israel Have a Constitution? . The lecture and reception which follows are open free to the public. Dorner has delivered Supreme Court opinions recognizing the right of women to serve as pilots in the Israel Defense Forces and the right of homosexuals to equal treatment. She sat as a member of the panel that presided over the critical Nachmani case, in which she wrote that the mother\u27s right to motherhood overrode her husband\u27s right not to be a father. Her published works include Affirmative Action and Women\u27s Equality and The Influence of Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty on the Law of Arrest (both published in Hebrew). Dorner earned a law degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1956. In 1960, she served as defense attorney in the Israeli military courts, advancing to the position of director of the Office of Defender. In 1973, she was appointed president of the Military District Court. In 1974, she served as a judge in the Military Court of Appeals, leaving the military with the rank of colonel. She was appointed a judge of the District Court of Be\u27er Sheva (the appellate level of the Israeli judiciary) in 1979 and served there until 1984, when she was appointed a judge of the District Court of Jerusalem. In April 1994, she assumed her current position as a permanent justice of the Supreme Court of Israel. Dorner is spending five days in Athens, during which time she will also present several seminars to law school faculty and students on the issues of human rights, equality, and parental rights. The Sibley Lecture Series, established in 1964 by the Charles Loridans Foundation of Atlanta, is designed to attract outstanding legal scholars of national prominence to the law school. It honors the late John A.
