UGA SCHOOL OF LAW WINS BEST BRIEF AND FINISHES SECOND IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

Tuesday, April 15, 2003 WRITER: Heidi Murphy, 706/542-5172, hmurphy@uga.edu CONTACT: Kellie Casey, 706/542-2739, krcasey@ uga.edu UGA SCHOOL OF LAW WINS BEST BRIEF AND FINISHES SECOND IN NATIONAL COMPETITION ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia School of Law prepared the winning brief and took home the second place overall trophy in the 2003 Dean Jerome Prince Memorial Evidence Moot Court Competition held in New York City, N.Y., on April 3-5. UGA defeated teams from Albany, Georgia State, Marquette, New York and Emory universities before facing George Mason University College of Law in the championship round. Second-year students Alan J. Hamilton, Amanda K. Eaton and Susannah D. Rogers competed well, just missing the national title according to faculty advisor and Hosch Professor of Law Thomas A. Eaton. Alan, Amanda and Susannah were outstanding advocates in a very tough competition, he said. I believe the judges had a tough time picking the winners as both sides argued their side of the case extremely well. I could see the outcome going either way. The Georgia team did, however, take first place in the written part of the competition winning the Best Brief Award. Eaton said it was particularly satisfying for the team to win the Best Brief Award since they just missed out in the oral phase of this prestigious national competition. This is the second year the School of Law has competed in Dean Jerome Prince Memorial Evidence Competition. Last year, UGA won the top trophy. A field of 33 law schools from across the nation participated in the 2003 tournament. #
