This chapter draws on research concerned with the educational opportunities taken up by young people who had been permanently excluded from or who had disengaged from mainstream schools in the United Kingdom and Australia (McGregor and Mills, forthcoming; Mills and McGregor 2010; Thomson and Russell 2007; see also Thomson and Russell, 2009; Russell and Thomson, 2011). The particular focus of the chapter concerns the insights that these alternative education settings provide for the mainstream sector in terms of addressing the needs of some of their most disadvantaged students
