International audienceIn the middle of the nineteenth century, the debate between Cuvier and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire becomes a breeding ground for new metaphors in architecture. From natural history to architectural creation, Semper and Viollet-le-Duc’s writings demonstrate their awareness of the heuristic potential of analogy. Debates in the field of compared anatomy are the source of many different organic models that were applied to buildings.
