International audienceIn the middle of the nineteenth century, the debate between Cuvier and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire becomes a breeding ground for new metaphors in architecture. From natural history to architectural creation, Semper and Viollet-le-Duc’s writings demonstrate their awareness of the heuristic potential of analogy. Debates in the field of compared anatomy are the source of many different organic models that were applied to buildings. They also arouse “the consciousness of the intimate connections which exist between the different branches of knowledge and skill.”Au milieu du XIXe siècle, les débats entre Cuvier et Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire offrent aux architectes un vivier d’analogies et de métaphores. De l’histoire naturelle à la création architecturale, les démarches de Viollet-le-Duc et de Semper témoignent d’une conscience aiguë de l’intérêt heuristique du processus analogique. Si les débats qui structurent l’anatomie comparée nourrissent les multiples déclinaisons d’un modèle organique appliqué aux édifices, ils motivent également la « conscience des liens intimes qui existent entre les différentes branches du savoir et de la technique.
