Un « modèle âge-profondeur paléoenvironnemental » pour interpréter les séquences sédimentaires en milieu portuaire (Portus, Italie)

International audienceThe geoarchaeology of ancient harbours is based on palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeomorphological analysis and considers data issued from archaeological and historical sources. Many different kinds of evidence need to be taken into account concerning the organisation of the harbour, its chronology, and its dynamics. The “Palaeoenvironmental Age-Depth Model” (PADM) was developed in the context of a European Union (ERC Adanced Grant) funded project studying Roman ports across the Mediterranean Sea. It allows researchers to integrate all the data relevant to reconstructions of the development of harbour potential through time. The PADM is based on the analysis of one or several stratigraphic sequences with dates integrated within a classic “age-depth” model. To these is added evidence for the evolution of the water level, together with archaeological and historical data for calibrating the age-depth model (the draught of ships of specific periods, chronological data, level of quays etc.). In this paper, this diagram is tested against the case of Portus. It shows the evolution of the depositional context, and reconstructs the evolution of the water column of the harbour through time.Les recherches géoarchéologiques sur les ports anciens s’appuient sur des études paléoenvironnementales et paléogéomorphologiques mobilisant des connaissances issues de l’archéologie et de l’histoire. Un nombre important de données doit ainsi être pris en compte concernant l’organisation du port, sa chronologie, ses dynamiques. Le « Modèle Âge-Profondeur Paléoenvironnemental » (MAPP) a été conçu dans le cadre d’un projet transdisciplinaire européen sur l’étude des ports romains de Méditerranée. Dans ce contexte, le MAPP permet de mettre en commun l’ensemble des données pertinentes pour reconstruire l’évolution des potentialités portuaires d’une surface en eau au cours du temps. Il se base sur l’analyse d’une ou plusieurs carotte(s) sédimentaire(s) dont les dates sont intégrées à un modèle âge-profondeur classique. Ensuite, sont ajoutées sur ce même graphique des informations sur l’évolution de la ligne d’eau et toutes les informations issues de l’archéologie ou de l’histoire permettant de calibrer le modèle âge-profondeur (tirant d’eau des bateaux en usage à l’époque de fonctionnement du port, données chronologiques, niveaux des quais etc.). Ce diagramme est appliqué ici au cas de Portus et permet d’évaluer l’évolution des conditions de dépôt et la colonne d’eau disponible au cours du temps au cœur de ce système portuaire
