International audienceThis paper looks at two periods of Ecuadorian literary history, both marked by deep shifts: the 30’s and the 90’s. A parallel analysis of Demetrio Aguilera Malta’s Los que se van (1930) and Don Goyo (1933) and Huilo Ruales Hualca’s Fetiche y Fantoche (1994) reveals a similar use of “transgression” as a literary tool. I argue that the concept of “transgression” allows us to understand the desire of both writers to go beyond the limits of the prevailing narrative canons, and intend to show how this transgressive dynamic is illustrated in the construction of the urban space framing the narration, between misery and eroticization, as well as in the creation of characters, whose main trait is excess, with shades of humor, d...
