In seismically active regions, faults nucleate, propagate, and form networks that evolve over time. Progressive strain localisation and periodic fault system re-configuration alter the geometrical complexity and internal structure of fault systems. To better simulate long-term crustal deformation including fault nucleation and propagation (i.e. creation of new frictional surfaces) a numerical model should incorporate concepts of fracture mechanics in a numerical framework that enables representation of evolving interfaces.
