International audienceThe ethnic revival after the restoration of democracy in 1990 is one of the key topics of Nepal's recent political and cultural history. The Nepali janajati/adivasi organisations intend to promote their own culture and to rectify the discriminations suffered by tribal groups in all spheres of social life. Besides cultural demands, they are calling for a reservation system (which does not yet exist in Nepal) to ensure a better representation at national level. This article intends to explore this ethnicising discourse in matters of autochthony, social grouping, religion, and federalism. It discusses its essentialist rhetoric and its possible contradictions with democratic rules and practices
