Les habitants d'Angkor Une lecture dans l'espace et dans le temps des inscriptions sociales de populations villageoises installées dans un territoire ancien

Abstract"Amnesia”, the word keeps coming back in Westerners’ talks about the difficulties encounteredwhenever one wishes to understand historical and genealogical memory and models of socialorganization in Cambodia based on traditional supports, be it written or oral. This thesis seeks toexplore how "space", also considered as an object of research, could be used as a medium for theexpression and the transmission of social practices and stories. Based on ethnographic researchconducted with families living in the archaeological site of Angkor, this study begins with a readingof the social (re) construction from the basis of domestic space. The building of houses and theways in which they are inhabited are examined from a technical, ritual and social point of view, intandem with data on cardinal orientations and their symbolism. The research then expands to thehamlet, the village, and the " petit pays. " It explains how social and identity relations are articulatedand transmitted while being reformulated in a space formatted according to cultural representations aswell as local and regional stories. The thesis ends with a study of the shaping of the sacred space.Cartographic mappings of the spatial distribution of deities in areas previously studied reveal ahierarchical system of territorial and social control operated by powerful deceased personalities.Starting with the house, this study ends with an interpretative essay on the temple seen as a spatialmatrix from which social disharmonies could be regulated.Résumé« Amnésie », le terme ne cesse de revenir dans les propos des Occidentaux pour évoquer lesdifficultés rencontrées dès lors que l’on entend appréhender auprès des Cambodgiens une mémoirehistorique et généalogique ainsi qu’un modèle d’organisation sociale à partir des supportstraditionnels que sont l’écrit et l’oralité. Ce travail propose d’explorer en quoi “l’espace”, considérécomme objet de recherche pourrait également servir de support à l’expression et à la transmissionde pratiques sociales et d’histoires. Sur la base d’une ethnographie menée à partir de familles quihabitent sur le site archéologique d’Angkor, l’étude commence par une lecture de la(re)construction sociale à partir de l’espace domestique. L’édification des maisons et les façons d’yhabiter sont étudiées d’un point de vue technique, rituel et social croisé avec des données sur lesorientations et la symbolique qui leur est attachée. La recherche s’élargit ensuite au hameau, auvillage et au “petit pays” et montre comment les relations sociales et identitaires s’expriment et setransmettent tout en se reformulant dans un espace formaté selon des représentations culturelles etdes histoires locales et régionales. La thèse se termine par l’étude de la mise en forme du sacré dansl’espace. Des relevés cartographiques de la distribution spatiale de divinités dans les différentsespaces emboités précédemment étudiés révèlent un contrôle territorial et social opéré par desfigures de défunts puissants. Cette étude commencée par la maison s’achève sur un essaid’interprétation du temple en tant que matrice spatiale à partir de laquelle les dysharmonies socialespeuvent être régulées
