International audienceStarting with a brief history of sign language in France, this paper focuses on the specific training of French Sign language interpreters today. It particularly intends to analyze whether or not this specificity is evidence of a fundamental difference between the profession of French Sign language interpreters and the profession of vocal languages conference interpreters. Traces of the existence of sign language have indeed been found since at least Antiquity, but the visual-gestural particularity of sign language has sometimes led individuals who were unfamiliar with it to think it was not a legitimate language, and that sign language interpreters were not doing the same work as vocal languages interpreters.
