The competitiveness clusters (“pôles de compétitivité”), labeled in 2005 by the French government, aredesigned to support collaborative research and development (R&D) projects. Their originality is that theylead multiple organizations (companies, universities, research laboratories, etc.) geographically close toeach other to cooperate in order to generate innovations. Is geographical proximity a necessary condition forthe proper coordination of innovation activities in competitiveness clusters?
