Un cas d’école, l’évolution de la géographie bordelaise depuis 1876: Contexte historique , divorce nature-société, impact de l’hypermodernité

International audienceThis article describes the recent changing of geographical sciences in Bordeaux University and CNRS through theprism of physical geography and tropical geography. The main objective is to analyze the role of geographical and scientificalcontext, the part of local parameters, the types of behaviors, the effects of successive reforms, but also the characteristicsof a post-modern, socio-cultural and anthropocentric french geography that has cut its roots with natural sciences. Thissituation is paradoxical because of the imperative need to study the socio-ecological crisis both with social and naturalistcriteria. All these indicators show the different facets of a changing science and the distress of people. Since 2000, amongthe many factors of change, there are the restructurings, competition for funding and publications («publish or perish»),hyperspecialization, the pressure of bibliometry, internet and ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), accompaniedby bureaucracy, standards diktat, leading to caporalisation, degradation of humanistic spirit, suffering at work, loss ofmotivation and end of courage. These are the signs of a « flat » and shortened world, of a science with blinders, afflicted bythe « short-termism » syndrome, that is to say the obsession of productivity and competition. Against this social pathologies,indicators of the moral crisis of the neoliberal society, a reunited geography could establish new diagnostics, at the frontiersocial sciences / natural sciences.Partant d’un cas régional, cet article décrit l’évolution de la géographie bordelaise depuis Pierre Foncin (1876),tout en se focalisant sur la période récente et en montrant le divorce entre l’amont naturaliste et l’aval social de la géographie.L’objectif principal est d’analyser le rôle du contexte géographique et scientifique local et général, les types decomportements, les effets des réformes successives, mais aussi le développement d’une géographie sociale postmoderne,puis hypermoderne en décalage avec la crise socio-écologique qui réclame pourtant un diagnostic géographiqueet historique global au contact des sciences de la nature et de l’homme. Tous ces indicateurs révèlent les différentesfacettes d’un monde scientifique en mutation et désarroi profond qui se calque désormais sur l’économie de marché.Depuis 2000, parmi les multiples facteurs du changement, il y a les restructurations, la course aux financements et auxpublications (« publish or perish »), l’hyperspécialisation, la pression de la bibliométrie, d’internet et des TIC (Techniquesde l’Information et de la Communication), avec en toile de fond les techniques du management et le diktat des normesconduisant à une bureaucratie aliénante, à une dégradation de l’esprit humaniste et à une banalisation de la souffrancepsychologique au travail. Ces signes sont révélateurs d’un monde raccourci et d’une science à oeillères contaminée par le« court-termisme », car dominée par l’obsession de la productivité, de la compétition, du chiffre. Face à cette conjonctionde pathologies sociales, révélatrices d’une crise des valeurs de la société actuelle, une géographie réunifiée et renouveléepourrait contribuer à établir utilement de nouveaux diagnostics pertinents à la frontière Nature - Société en partantd’un paradigme extra-scientifique fondé sur l’éthique humaniste et sur la possibilité du « dire vrai » (la parrêsia) par oppositionà une neutralité irresponsable face aux enjeux actuels
