International audienceABSTRACT. – In the middle of the second book of his De rerum natura, Lucretius inserts a long digression about the myth of the Goddess Cybele. This excursus, which interrupts an account on Epicurean Physics, opens with a biological metaphor concerning the maternal dimension of Earth. The figure of mother/Earth, which extends the analogy between atoms and seeds and with Lucretius' ideas on the origins of life, is perfectly integrated in the Epicurean explanatory system. However, in addition to some concerns about Physics, this digression presents a triple function involving Ethics, Polemic and Epistemology: refuting the mythical discourse related to Cybele's cult contributes to value the Epicurean theology.
