Constructivism is a. relatively recent concept to re-emerge in the career literature. This chapter explores how career theory has evolved over the last century and how constructivism has emerged as part of that history. The need for career counseling to consider the premises of constructivism is explored and reasons for a change towards a career constructivist approach are provided. Given its more recent prominence, the chapter also considers definitional issues that have emerged around the construct and the various ways it is presently defined. The implications of a constructivist approach for career counseling are described as well as emergent frameworks that guide counseling from this perspective.
