Current civil aircraft are significantly quieter than the civil aircraft of the 20th century. But the overall impact of aircraft noise has not been reduced by the same token because the number of aircraft operations has been steadily increasing. So to compensate for the increase in aircraft operations and reduce the overall impact of aircraft noise, we must design quieter aircraft.The noise generated by the jet leaving the engine exhaust is the dominant source when the aircraft is taking off, so its reduction will lead to significant reduction of the total aircraft noise.
