Households buy food products, that vary from cheap to expensive, from healthy to unhealthy, from basic to value-added. Beside the nutritional, economic factors have a major and often decisive significance on a households’ ability to afford certain food products. Income, price and housing costs have a significant influence on the purchase of food products. Aim of this paper is to investigate factors influencing the households’ ability to afford meat or fish in a meal every other day (or a vegetarian substitute) using data from conducted Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) in Serbia for the year 2013.
