This paper intends to analyze the literary acknowledgement of Carmen Sylva, the German-born first Queen of Romania, within the Romanian literature and culture. The analysis follows several complementary directions: firstly, the image of this aristocratic female writer in the eyes of her contemporaries and fellow citizens; secondly, the impact of this complex personality upon the culture and society of her time; and thirdly, her posthumous literary recognition. Hence, this paper appeals to a great extent, yet not exclusively to the critical opinions of the Queen’s contemporaries, which generate controversy around this author
