A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF HISTOPATHOLOGICAL SPECTRUM OF TUBAL LESIONS AT TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL, MGMH, HYDERABAD- ONE YEAR STUDY

BACKGROUND Fallopian tube is one of the commonest surgical specimens received along with uterus. The aims and objectives of this study is to describe various gross and histopathological lesions seen in surgically-resected specimens of fallopian tube and to study the incidence of various pathological lesions of fallopian tube and their age distributions. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample size of 382 cases was included in this study, which consisted of all the specimens of fallopian tubes of all age groups obtained by salpingectomy, tubal ligation, salpingo-oophorectomy or along with hysterectomy. All the specimens were processed by routine histopathological techniques. Histopathological features were studied on Haematoxylin and Eosin stained sections. RESULTS In our study, out of the 382 fallopian tube specimens, 223 cases (58.4%) were normal, whereas 159 cases (41.6%) fallopian tubes were abnormal. Of the abnormal fallopian tube specimens, the most common histopathological finding observed were inflammatory conditions seen in 61/159 (16%) of the fallopian tubes seen most commonly in the age group of 21-40 years. Chronic salpingitis accounting for 61 cases (16%) being the most common lesion followed by ectopic tubal gestation 49 cases (12.8%), hydrosalpinx 9 cases (2.3%) benign epithelial proliferations accounting to 8 cases (2.1%), haematosalpinx 7 (1.8%), pyosalpinx 6 cases (1.6%), fimbrial cysts, Walthard cell rest up to 5 cases (1.3%), granulomatous salpingitis 3 (0.8%), endometriosis 3 (0.8%) and paratubal cysts 2 (0.5%) in decreasing order of frequency. No primary neoplasm of the fallopian tube was observed, however, there were one case of secondary involvement of the tube by serous adenocarcinoma of ovary. Rare incidental finding of a case of tubal papilloma was encountered in HPE in our study. CONCLUSION The present study describes the broad spectrum of lesions in fallopian tube and their incidence with respect to age group. Majority of the lesions were non-neoplastic comprising predominantly of inflammatory lesions seen most commonly in 21-45 yrs. age group. Neoplastic lesions of the fallopian tube were rare
