<p>The solid line represents the averaged fMRI signal intensity over the time-course of the distension paradigm (dashed-line represents deflation or inflation state of the colorectal balloon) for a typical experiment. As shown there is a rapid increase in signal intensity with balloon inflation indicating that the activated areas are due to the colonic stimulus.</p
