Mutation Patterns and Base Composition among Mitochondrial Genomes

<p>The two transitions are in red and blue, while the four possible transversions are in purple and green. Mutation spectrum data are from MA lines of Saccharomyces cerevisiae [<a href="http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.0060213#pbio-0060213-b016" target="_blank">16</a>], C. elegans [<a href="http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.0060213#pbio-0060213-b012" target="_blank">12</a>], and D. melanogaster [<a href="http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.0060213#pbio-0060213-b014" target="_blank">14</a>], as well as mitochondrial mutator strains of Mus musculus [<a href="http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.0060213#pbio-0060213-b010" target="_blank">10</a>]. Nucleotide frequencies are from complete mtDNA sequences from each species (Drosophila data exclude the A+T-rich D-loop region).
