Loss of one <i>Csf1r</i> allele in male mice is protective for weight loss and symptoms associated with DSS-induced colitis.

<p>Eight to 10-week old FVB/NJ male mice were given water with 2% w/v DSS <i>ad libitum</i> for 8 days and their body weight changes monitored during this period. (<b>A–B</b>) Significant changes in body weight of WT but not in <i>Csf1r^+/−</i> mice was evident at day 8 of treatment. (<b>C–D</b>) Whole Animal Disease Activity Index for (WADI) WT (<b>C</b>) and <i>Csf1r^+/−</i> (<b>D</b>) mice based on the modified criteria reported by Marshall <i>et al</i> (2007) <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0056951#pone.0056951-Marshall1" target="_blank">[31]</a> and described in the <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0056951#s4" target="_blank">Methods</a>. One WT mouse died at day 5 and one <i>Csf1r^+/−</i> mouse died at day 7 whereas WT mice overall showed significantly elevated WADI compared to <i>Csf1r^+/−</i> mice (*P<0.001, ANOVA with Bonferroni’s Multiple Comparison Test). Female mice of both genotypes show no observable clinical symptoms of inflammation (<i>data not shown</i>).
