<div><p>In syntrophic conversion of butyrate to methane and CO<sub>2</sub>, butyrate is oxidized to acetate by secondary fermenting bacteria such as <i>Syntrophomonas wolfei</i> in close cooperation with methanogenic partner organisms, e.g., <i>Methanospirillum hungatei</i>.
