This chapter incorporates an introduction into various classes and applications of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), leading into a more detailed description of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs). The basic chemistry, morphology and properties of TPU elastomers is described, followed by an in-depth discussion of global efforts to reinforce TPUs with nanofillers including silica-based, carbon-based and layered silicate-based nanomaterials. Particular attention is paid to the need to balance the influence of nano-reinforcement on properties such as stiffness, tensile strength, tear strength and resilience.
