<p>All strains were grown to mid-exponential phase in M199 medium at pH 4 and pH 8 with or without 100 µM BPS, and β-galactosidase activity was examined as described in Materials and methods. At least two replicates and three independent transformants in each experiment were used to determine average Miller units, and error bars represent the standard deviation of triplicate assays.
