Transfusion of small quantities of heterologous blood may cause severe pulmonary hypertensive response in certain species. To determine the responsible component in the donor blood and the main mediator, we studied the responses of goats to small quantities of rabbit blood components and observed the effects of several pharmacologic agents on these responses. In anesthetized goats, a bolus injection of 0.004 ml/kg rabbit blood caused the pulmonary arterial pressure to increase from 25.3 +/- 2.8 to 57.1 +/- 11.6 cm H2O within 45 to 90 s, and the aortic thromboxane concentration rose from 44 +/- 38 to 238 +/- 104 pg/ml.
