Model of the stratified microbial mat of Lake 21 and relative abundances of bacterial phyla.

<p>Illustrated are the bacterial phyla, candidate divisions, and proteobacterial classes found within the different layers. Taxonomic classification was performed according to SILVA SSU rRNA database 111 <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0066662#pone.0066662-Pruesse1" target="_blank">[39]</a>. Bacterial phyla with a relative abundance lower 0.5% were summarized as the artificial group “Other”. The artificial group “Other” includes <i>Acidobacteria</i>, CD BHI80-139, CD BRC1, CD JL-ETNP-Z39, CD NPL-UPA2, CD WS6, <i>Chlorobi</i>, <i>Deinococcus</i>-<i>Thermus</i>, <i>Fibrobacteres</i>, <i>Lentisphaerae</i>, and <i>Synergistetes</i> (for details see <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0066662#pone.0066662.s003" target="_blank">Figure S3</a>).
