This paper reports preliminary findings from a larger ethnographic study of two discussion lists which have been formed as part of the rural women’s groups, Australian Women in Agriculture and the Queensland Rural Women’s Network. The central purpose is to use Baym’s (1998) computer mediated communication (CMC) framework to examine how a sense of community is constructed in these online groups. Data from four months of messages are examined in terms of the five dimensions which Baym (1998) argues shapes virtual communication in discussion lists.
