<div><p>The Gram-positive, spore-forming pathogen <i>Clostridium difficile</i> is the leading definable cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea worldwide. <i>C. difficile</i> infections are difficult to treat because of their frequent recurrence, which can cause life-threatening complications such as pseudomembranous colitis.
