Kajian Penanganan Anak Gizi Buruk Dan Prospeknya (Management of Severe Malnutrition and IT\u27s Prospect: a Review)

Severe malnutrition, defined as weight for height <-3 SD, still a public health problem in Indonesia suffered children under five of aged. Basic Health Research in 2010 found the prevalence of 6 percent among underfive years children in Indonesia, little bit lower than in 2007 that was 6.2 percent. According the protocol made from WHO in 1999, severely malnourished children should be treated in the hospital. There were some problems founds during implementation of this protocol, from the health staff and health facilities as well as from the subjects family. Recently there are two approaches of treatments for severely malnourished children, in-patients for the cases with complication and community-based therapeutic care (CTC) with regular visits to health facilities for those without complications. Out-patients treatments for malnourished children has been carried out since 1981 in Nutrition Clinic Bogor as a research laboratory of Center of Food and Nutrition Research Indonesia MOH. The program has been developed through several studies that has been conducted in the clinic combined with the latest science and technology for the treatments. Average recovery rates through outpatients treatment in several studies including in Indonesia >75 percent. This approach promises to be successful and together with in-patients care could increase the coverage in order to meet the total coverage of severely malnourished children according to Minimal Standard Services (SPM) of nutrition sector at the MOH Indonesia.
