<p>Mice were infected with WT or mutant <i>S. pneumoniae</i> (5×10⁵ CFU) via the intranasal route and euthanized 48 hours later. Cell (A) and neutrophil (B) influx were determined on BALF cytospin preparations. As a marker of neutrophil influx in lung tissue, MPO was measured in whole lung homogenates (C).
