<p>Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is composed of various morphologically and cytogenetically distinct subtypes, the most prevalent of which are clear cell RCC (ccRCC, 75-80%), papillary RCC (papRCC, 10-15%) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC, 5%).
