<p>UCP3 long (UCP3L) and short (UCP3S) mRNAs were measured by quantitative RT-PCR. mRNA levels were normalized to 18S RNA. n = 6 or 7 patients assigned to EC or to placebo, respectively; error bars, s.d. The inset shows the UCP3S/UCP3L mRNA ratio. The PCR experiments were performed twice in triplicate. Data were analysed by unpaired Student’s t test.</p
