Suppressor of cytokine signalling (SOCS) 3 is a negative regulator of cytokines and growth factors that signal through class I cytokine receptors, and as such, modulates the responsiveness of cells to cytokine stimulation. One of the dominant signalling pathways employed by cytokines is the Janus kinase/Signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway, and SOCS3 is a product of this pathway, and specifically inhibits this pathway, in a negative feed-back loop.
