Integrin α_Dβ₂ is Dynamically Expressed by Human Monocyte-derived Macrophages (MDM) and Dendritic Cells (MDDC).

<p>Isolated human monocytes were cultured in human serum (Experiment 1) or M-CSF (Experiment 2) for 3 days to induce differentiation into monocyte-derived macrophages <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0112770#pone.0112770-Elstad1" target="_blank">[28]</a>,<a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0112770#pone.0112770-Palucka1" target="_blank">[29]</a>. After 6 days in culture they were treated with LPS, with IFNg as a stimulus for “classic activation”, or with IL-4 as a stimulus for “alternative activation” <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0112770#pone.0112770-Varin1" target="_blank">[46]</a>,<a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0112770#pone.0112770-deWaalMalefyt1" target="_blank">[47]</a>. In a third experiment monocytes were cultured in GM-CSF and IL-4 to induce differentiation to immature MDDC (“control”); they were then treated with LPS to trigger transition to mature MDDC (“LPS”) <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0112770#pone.0112770-Palucka1" target="_blank">[29]</a>.
