A synthetic method for highly substituted pyridinium salts from the multicomponent reaction of vinyl ketones/aldehydes, amines, and alkynes using a rhodium catalyst is demonstrated. The catalytic reaction proceeds via an in situ generated imine-assisted Rh<sup>III</sup>-catalyzed vinylic C–H activation
