<p>Spores of <i>B. subtilis</i> strains PS832 (wild-type; ●), PS4389 (<i>gerW</i>1; ■) and PS4399 (<i>gerW</i>2, ▲) were heat shocked, cooled, and incubated with shaking at 37°C and an initial OD<sub>600</sub> of 0.5 in 2xYT medium plus 5 mM L-alanine, and the OD<sub>600</sub> of the cultures was measured.</p
