<b><i>Background:</i></b> Although hyperthyroidism predisposes to atrial fibrillation, previous trials have suggested decreased triiodothyronine (T<sub>3</sub>) concentrations to be associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Therapy with thyroid hormones (TH), however, did not reduce the risk of POAF.
