Effect of Mito-TEMPO on the production of hydrogen peroxide by <i>L</i>. <i>amazonensis</i> and on the Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase activity of the parasite.

<p>Living parasites were incubated for 20 min in the reaction medium, with the addition of increasing concentrations of Mito-TEMPO in the presence (white circles) or absence (black circles) of 2.5 μM heme, as indicated on the abscissa (A). The intact cells were incubated with 100 μM Mito-TEMPO, in the presence or absence of 2.5 μM of heme, as indicated on the abscissa, for 20 min. Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase activity (B) and Cellular viability (C) were determinated. The values represent the mean ± standard error of at least three independent experiments. *Statistically significant when compared to cells incubated with 2.5 μM of heme without Mito-TEMPO (n = 3, P < 0.05).
