The non-parametric Behrens-Fisher Problem: A Studentized Permutation Test and Robust Confidence Intervals for the Shift Effect

Für das nichtparametrische Behrens-Fisher-Problem wird ein Permutationstest basierend auf der studentisierten Rangstatistik von Brunner und Munzel vorgeschlagen. Diese Methode ist auch auf Scores und ordinale Daten anwendbar. Mithilfe des zentralen Grenzwertsatzes von Janssen läßt sich zeigen, dass die asymptotische Verteilung dieser Teststatistik eine Standardnormalverteilung ist. Für sehr kleine oder sehr unterschiedliche Stichprobenumfänge, wie sie in medizinischen oder biologischen Anwendungen häufig auftreten, wurde eine umfangreiche Simulationsstudie durchgeführt. Sie zeigt, dass der Permutationstest für Daten mit verschiedenen zugrunde liegenden Verteilungen gut funktioniert. Außerdem werden die Permutationsquantile dieser Rangstatistik verwendet, um ein robustes Konfidenzintervall für den Shift-Effekt in einer Behrens-Fisher-Situation zu konstruieren. Eine Simulationsstudie zeigt, dass dieses Konfidenzintervall bei unterschiedlichen Verteilungen der Daten das vorgegebene Niveau gut einhält. Der vorgeschlagene Test und das Konfidenzintervall werden auf Daten aus klinischen Studien angewendet.For the nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem a permutation test based on the studentized rank statistic of Brunner and Munzel is proposed. This procedure is applicable to count or ordered categorical data. By applying the central limit theorem of Janssen, it is shown that the asymptotic permutational distribution of this test statistic is a standard normal distribution. For very small and very different sample sizes, frequently occuring in medical and biological applications, an extensive simulation study suggest that this permutation test works well for data from several underlying distributions. Furthermore the permutational quantiles of this rank statistic are used to construct robust confidence intervals for the shift effect in a Behrens-Fisher situation. A simulation study shows good properties of these confidence intervals for different underlying distributions. The proposed test and the confidence interval are applied to data from a clinical trial
