The state and ideology theory in structuralist Marxism

Die Untersuchung beschäftigt sich mit dem in den 60er Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts entwickelten strukturalistischen Marxismus, der vor allem durch die Arbeiten Althussers, Balibars und Poulantzas´ in Frankreich einen ähnlichen Stellenwert wie die Frankfurter Schule" in Deutschland inne hatte. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden die methodologischen Konzepte Althussers vorgestellt. Diese stellen im marxistischen Diskurs einen erheblichen Einschnitt dar, da Althusser versucht, zentrale Thesen des klassischen" Marxismus (insbesondere des hegelianisch geprägten Marxismus in der Lesart G. Lukács) zu dekonstruieren. Hierbei negiert Althusser vor allem eine hervorgehobene Bedeutung der Arbeiterklasse im Sinne des Subjekts und Objekts der Geschichtsentwicklung und versucht, eine marxistische Geschichtsinterpretation zu entwickeln, die nicht auf einer philosophischen Grundlage basiert. Die sich daran anschließende Ideologie- und Subjektkonzeption Althussers ist in der marxistischen Theorie wohl als wegweisend einzustufen: Ideologie wird nicht als Verblendung", sondern als gesellschaftliche Praxisform untersucht. Damit gelingt es Althusser, sowohl Anschluss an diskurstheoretische Ansätze zu finden als auch staatliche Institutionen zu identifizieren, in denen die ideologische Reproduktion der Gesellschaft organisiert und so die Hegemonie einer Klasse reproduziert wird. Im folgenden werden die staatstheoretischen Arbeiten Poulantzas´ vorgestellt, die - ausgehend von der Althusser"schen Epistemologie und Ideologietheorie, den politiktheoretischen Arbeiten Gramscis und den Analysen Foucaults - zu einem Staatsbegriff gelangen, der gegenüber traditionellen marxistischen Analysen erheblich erweitert wird: in dieser Perspektive wird der Staat nicht nur als repressiver Apparat analysiert, sondern es werden ebenso ideologische und ökonomische Funktionen des Staates untersucht, die hinsichtlich der Reproduktion der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft als notwendig zu dem Staat gehörig begriffen werden. Daran anschließend entwirft Poulantzas den Begriff des autoritären Etatismus" und versucht damit, die westeuropäischen Staatsformen in den 70er Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts zu analysieren. Hierbei kommt Poulantzas zu der Schlussfolgerung, dass sich insbesondere hinsichtlich der Bedeutung der Parteien und der Verwaltung erhebliche Transformationen in den westeuropäischen Staaten ergeben haben, die die demokratische Verfasstheit des bürgerlichen Staates tendenziell unterminieren.The investigation concerns itself with the structuralist Marxism developed in the 1960"s, which had a similar status in France to that of the "Frankfurter Schule" in Germany, above all thanks to the work by Althusser, Balibar and Poulantzas. In the first part of the dissertation, Althusser"s methodological concepts are presented. In the Marxist discourse, they represent a considerable incision, as Althusser attempts to deconstruct central theses of "classical" Marxism (in particular the Hegel-marked Marxism à la G. Lukács). In this, Althusser negates above all an emphasised importance of the working class within the sense of the subject and object of development of history and attempts to develop a Marxist interpretation of history not based on a philosophical foundation. Althusser"s subsequent ideology and subject concept is to be classified as a landmark in Marxist theory: ideology is not examined as "blindness", but as a social form of practice. In this way, Althusser manages both to find a connection to discourse-theoretical approaches and also to identify state institutions in which the ideological reproduction of society is organised and thus the hegemony of a class is reproduced. After this, the state-theory work of Poulantzas is presented, which - on the basis of Althusser"s epistemology and ideological theory, the work on political theory by Gramsci and Foucault"s analyses - achieves a concept of a state considerably extended in comparison with traditional Marxist analyses: in this perspective, the state is not only analysed as a repressive apparatus, but ideological and economical functions of the state which are understood as being necessarily part of the state with a view to the reproduction of the bourgeois society are also examined. After this, Poulantzas creates the term of "authoritarian statehood", thus trying to analyse the Western European state forms in the 1970"s. In this, Poulantzas comes to the conclusion that considerable transformations have taken place in the states of Western Europe, in particular with regard to the importance of parties and administration, the tendency of which is to undermine the democratic formation of a bourgeois state
