Die Phylogenese der Wasserbüffel (Bubalus bubalis) wird noch immer kontrovers diskutiert. In der Vergangenheit variierte die Divergenzzeit zwischen Fluß- und Sumpfbüffeln, je nach Analysemethode, zwischen 10.000 und 1,7 Mio. Jahren. Um ein besseres Bild zu erhalten, wurde die komplette mitochondriale D-loop Region von 80 Büffeln aus vier verschiedenen Rassen analysierten. Im einzelnen waren dies 19 Sumpfbüffel (Carabao) und 61 Flußbüffel (Murrah, Jafarabadi und Mediterraneo).
