We show a comprehensive study on the structure and electronic properties of a layered manganese oxide commonly known as birnessite. We present the effects of substituting different intercalated cations (Li<sup>+</sup>, Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, Be<sup>2+</sup>, Mg<sup>2+</sup>, Ca<sup>2+</sup>, Sr<sup>2+</sup>, Zn<sup>2+</sup>, B<sup>3+</sup>, Al<sup>3+</sup>, Ga<sup>3+</sup>, Sc<sup>3+</sup>, and Y<sup>3+</sup>) and the role of waters in the intercalated layer.
