Changes in collagen type I and III expression, decorin, and matrix turnover enzymes Mmp14, Timp1, and Timp3 indicate an adaptive matrix response in the supraspinatus tendon to non-injurious, chronic exercise. Compared to 8 weeks of chronic exercise, more gene changes are seen at 1 week, suggesting that these adaptive processes begin soon after initiating an exercise protocol. The only altered inflammatory gene (AA pathway or cytokine) was Alox5ap, indicating that inflammation associated with the arachidonic acid cascade is not a main pathway in the chronic response of tendon to exercise.
