A technique for outdoor scene analysis using a knowledge-based region analysis system is presented. The three main components are: (1) building the feature database; (2) knowledge representation and acquisition; and (3) control organization. Particular attention is paid to the 'focus-field of vision' knowledge representation and 'focus-field of vision' inference engine. A comparison of matching cost between the focus-field of vision engine and some other engines is presented. The system has been implemented in Fortran 77. Experiments on the interpretation of outdoor scenes including sky, building, trees, ground, and road have been made. The application of this system to robot vision navigation is discussed
