Cadmium-based quantum dots incorporating group 16 elements show promise of superior optical properties. The excitonic properties of three small size CdX (X = S, Se, Te) tetrahedral clusters with structures mirroring the real chemical systems (Cd<sub>17</sub>X<sub>4</sub>(XH)<sub>28</sub>Na<sub>2</sub>, Cd<sub>32</sub>X<sub>14</sub>(XH)<sub>40</sub>Na<sub>4</sub>, Cd<sub>54</sub>X<sub>32</sub>(XH)<sub>52</sub>Na<sub>8</sub>) were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) in conjunction with quasi-particle corrections.
