Proliferative vitreoretinopathy is a serious complication of retinal detachment, yet its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Retinal pigment epithelial cells and glial cells are found in the fibrous membranes in proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Many cytokines are involved in the pathology.
